Advice on securing soccer scholarships in America for international students

Dreaming of playing college soccer in America as an international student, but I’m not sure where to start with scholarships. What are the best steps to take? Would love to hear from anyone who's been through this process.

Securing a soccer scholarship as an international student involves a combination of showcasing your skills, academic performance, and networking with various college coaches. Here are a few steps to help you along this path:

1. Be Proactive: Start early, preferably in your junior year of high school.

2. Create a Soccer Resume: Include all aspects of your soccer and academic career up to this point. This includes your playing history, statistics, club affiliations, academic achievements and any soccer awards or recognitions you've received. This information will be beneficial in communicating your abilities and potential to college coaches.

3. Highlight Video: Coaches generally do not have the time or resources to view international athletes personally, so having a strong video showcasing your soccer skills is absolutely vital. It can be anything from a highlights reel to a full-game recording, as long as it clearly depicts your abilities.

4. Research Colleges: Look up colleges that have soccer programs and that suit your academic requirements as well. Remember, you're not just going to play soccer, you're going there to study too. NCAA Division I and II schools can offer athletic scholarships, while Division III schools do not offer athletic-based funding, but they often provide financial aid opportunities and academic scholarships. You might also want to consider NAIA and junior colleges.

5. Get in Touch With Coaches: After you have targeted a few schools, begin emailing the soccer coaches of these faculties. Your email should be formal and provide a succinct summary of who you are, your soccer career, and why you are interested in their program. Attach your soccer resume and your highlight video.

6. Clear Your Eligibility: International students wishing to play at NCAA colleges and universities in America need to register with and be certified as eligible by the NCAA Eligibility Center. The same goes for NAIA institutions, which have their own eligibility process at the NAIA Eligibility Center.

7. SAT Scores: Although standardized tests are becoming less essential in the college admissions process, for international students they can still be important. Coaches can use these scores to make an early assessment before your application is formally reviewed by the admissions office.

Remember, getting a soccer scholarship is as much about your skills on the field as it is about your persistence off it. So, keep persevering and exploring various opportunities until you find the right fit. Best of luck with your journey!
