How long do AP exams usually take?

Hey, I'm a junior planning to take a few AP tests for the first time and I'm a bit curious about their length. About how much time should I expect to spend taking each AP exam? And are some tests longer than others?

Hello! Each AP exam typically consists of a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. Including breaks and instructions, most AP exams usually last around 3.5 hours. The multiple-choice section generally takes about 1.5 hours, and the free-response section takes around 1.5-2 hours depending on the specific exam.

It's important to note that some AP exams, like AP Studio Art and AP Computer Science Principles, have unique formats and won't follow the conventional timed structure. Additionally, some exams like AP English Literature and AP World History might feel longer due to their heavy focus on essay writing. However, most exams will still fall within the average 3.5-hour range.

Make sure to arrive a little earlier than the scheduled exam time because you'll need some time for check-in procedures, seat assignments, and receiving initial instructions. Also, remember to bring an approved watch (not a smart watch) to keep track of time if that's something you are stressed about. Good luck with your exams!
