I'm planning on applying to George Mason University soon and was wondering what the application process is like. Any tips on what to focus on for my application or key dates to remember would be great!
George Mason University (GMU) uses the Common Application, so you will complete that to apply. The Common App requires you to fill in general biographical and educational information, along with a personal essay. GMU does not have specific supplemental essays to complete but you may choose to submit an extra statement or letter of recommendation (not required though).
As you're completing the Common App, concentrate on presenting a comprehensive snapshot of who you are, your academic achievements, and your activities outside of the classroom. Be genuine in your personal essay—this is often one of the best ways you can differentiate yourself from other applicants.
GMU looks at your high school academic record, including your classes and grades, to evaluate your application. Competitive applicants usually have a GPA of 3.65 or higher, but George Mason's admissions process is more holistic and doesn't solely rely on a high GPA for admissions.
Extracurricular activities are also an important part of your application. Rather than trying to fill up your application with a laundry list of activities, consider focusing on a few that you are deeply committed to and where you have held leadership positions or made significant contributions.
GMU has rolling admissions, allowing you to apply anytime and receive a decision within a few weeks. However, they do have certain priority deadlines. For the Fall semester, the deadline is typically around November 1 for Early Action and January 15 for Regular Decision. For the Spring semester, it is usually around October 1. These dates can occasionally change, so it's a good idea to double-check on GMU's admissions site.
Remember that, like most colleges, GMU also requires you to submit your High School transcript and ACT/SAT scores, though they are test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle.
Finally, make sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after October 1 to be considered for financial aid. GMU's code is 003749.
Good luck with your application to GMU!
