Advice on applying to the Korean Language Scholarship?

I want to improve my Korean skills and I've heard about scholarships for Korean language studies in Korea. Does anyone know how to apply for these and what the eligibility criteria might be? Any personal experiences to share?

It's excellent that you're ready to deepen your proficiency in Korean by enrolling in a language program in Korea. Scholarships for studying Korean in Korea primarily come from Korean universities, the Korean government, or a few select external organizations.

One of the most recognized scholarships is the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP). Eligibility criteria often include elements like being under a certain age (typically under 25 for undergraduates and under 40 for postgraduates), holding a bachelor's degree, and maintaining a certain GPA (usually above 2.64 on a 4.0 scale). Studying Korean is not an explicit requirement, but it would undoubtedly help your application stand out. For the KGSP, you apply either through a Korean embassy in your home country or a participating Korean university.

Some Korean universities offer their own scholarships for language study. These scholarships are typically merit-based, looking at your academic performance, although some offer need-based scholarships as well. Application processes may vary, but you generally need to apply directly to the university with a completed application form, personal statement/explanation of study plan, and supporting documentation such as academic transcripts.

You also might want to consider organizations like the Blakemore Foundation that grant scholarships for Asian language study. These scholarships often cover tuition, as well as living expenses, and their eligibility requirements are usually more flexible. You need to apply directly to the foundation and the process often includes submitting an application form, a personal statement, and references.

Personal stories can vary greatly, as the overall experience depends on factors such as the specific program, the city where you live, and your prior exposure to Korean culture. However, a consistent theme from many who have gone through these scholarships is the immersive nature of the programs. Being able to practice Korean outside the classroom setting, identifying real-life connections to what they are learning, and interacting with locals have typically been incredibly valuable experiences.

Regardless of which scholarship you're considering, ensure you start your application early. Plan enough time to gather all the necessary materials, and give yourself plenty of opportunities to revise and polish your application before submitting it. All the best in your endeavor!
