How many students are at UMass Amherst?

I'm trying to get a sense of what UMass Amherst is like and how large it is. Does anyone know the current student population? I'm interested in bigger schools, but I'm a bit worried about feeling anonymous.

As of 2024-2025, the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) has a total student enrollment of approximately 30,000, including both undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate population on its own is close to 23,000 students.

The size of a school can definitely impact your college experience. At larger universities like UMass Amherst, there are often a wide range of resources, academic offerings, and extracurricular activities. You can connect with students from diverse backgrounds and with a multitude of different interests.

However, keep in mind that attending a larger university does not necessarily mean that you will feel "anonymous." Many large universities offer programs or strategies to make the campus feel smaller and more intimate. For example, UMass Amherst has a First-Year Seminar program that allows new students to take a small, discussion-based class on various topics, promoting personal connections between students and faculty early in your academic journey. Plus, your connection with the university and your sense of belonging will also revolve around the friends you make, the clubs you join, and the courses you take. If you’re proactive about getting involved, you're less likely to feel lost in the crowd.
