Finding a Berkeley Scholarship for International Study

I'm planning to apply for a scholarship at UC Berkeley as an international student. Does anyone know about specific scholarships available for international students looking to study there? Any advice on how to make my application stand out?

While UC Berkeley doesn't generally offer specific merit scholarships for international students, they do provide a few scholarships for which international students can apply. Two of these are the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarships, which are the highest honors given to entering undergraduates, and the Undergraduate Scholarship, which is for entering and continuing students and is awarded based on financial need and merit.

Additionally, international students can also look for scholarships offered through the Berkeley International Office (BIO). BIO lists a number of external scholarships specifically for international students. However, writing a successful scholarship application often requires you to go beyond your academic achievements.

First, know your audience. Tailor each application to the specific scholarship you're applying for. This requires researching the organization providing the scholarship and understanding their mission.

Second, substantiate your claims. If you say you're a determined student, provide examples to illustrate it. Whether it was a project you initiated, a problem you solved, or an obstacle you overcame, tangible examples can go a long way in convincing the committee.

Third, let your passion shine through. Scholarship committees are not just interested in academic achievement or leadership skills; they're interested in you as a person. Share your story and the experiences that have shaped your passions and aspirations.

Lastly, proofread! A well-polished application is a testament to your seriousness and professionalism. Make sure to follow all instructions, stay within the word limit, and maintain a clear, concise writing style.

Best of luck with your application process!
