Regarding Top Private High Schools in the U.S.

As someone who might move for my senior year, I'm curious about which private high schools are considered the best in the country. Are there ones known for excellent college prep?

Determining what qualifies as the "best" private high school can be subjective depending on personal needs and preferences, from size to location, from co-ed or single-sex, to specialty programs. However, there are some consistently well-regarded schools known for their rigorous academics and excellent college preparation.

Phillips Academy Andover and Phillips Exeter Academy, both located in New England, are among the most prestigious. They offer a wide variety of AP classes, have an impressive student-to-teacher ratio ensuring personalized attention, and a strong record of alums attending top-tier colleges.

The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey is also widely recognized for its strong college prep curriculum and dedicated faculty. The school emphasizes the Harkness method, promoting discussion-based learning which can mirror the experience at many selective colleges.

In the Midwest, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools offers an array of advanced classes, a well-rounded arts program, and many extracurricular activities.

On the West Coast, The Harker School in California is known for its STEM program and sends an impressive number of students to top schools.

Trinity School in New York City is also routinely praised for its robust academics, extensive extracurriculars, and competitive college placement.

Research is key in this process. Look up each school's offerings to see what aligns with your needs and goals. You may want to consider factors such as the student-teacher ratio, average class size, college matriculation data, range and quality of course offerings (especially AP/IB courses if you're interested), extracurricular and sports options, and how students describe the school culture. Make sure to reach out to the admissions offices of these schools to get more accurate, personalized information. As you look into these schools keep in mind that a big name isn't the only path to success, fitting in and feeling comfortable in the school environment is just as important.
