What is the free college application process like?

I'm a high school junior and trying to save on application fees. I've heard some colleges offer free applications. How can I find them and what's the process like? Any tips on which schools typically offer this?

Applying to college for free isn't a complicated process, and there's a good number of colleges out there that don't charge application fees. Here are some things you should know:

1. Finding Colleges: While there's no definitive list of free-application-fee colleges, you can find some fairly comprehensive lists online. The best way to find out for sure is to visit each college's admissions page on their website.

2. Go Online: Some colleges will waive the application fee if you apply online, rather than by mail. This is often a more straightforward (and quicker) application process anyway.

3. Waivers: If the college does have an application fee, and you have financial need, then keep in mind that you can apply for fee waivers. These are available from the College Board for schools that accept the Common Application, and for the NACAC waiver for schools accepting other application methods.

4. Ask: If you can't find information for a particular school on application fee waivers, contact the admissions office directly and inquire.

Some notable schools that don't have an application fee year-round include Loyola University Chicago, United States Military Academy (West Point), and Carleton College. Also, many colleges remove their application fee during specific times of the year, like National College Application Month in November.

Staying organized is key. Keep track of the process for each school in a spreadsheet or similar tool to ensure you meet all requirements and deadlines accurately.
