International Scholarships for Northwestern University?

Thinking about applying to Northwestern and I'm wondering if there are international scholarships specifically for this school. Are there special criteria or things I should keep in mind while applying as an international student?

Northwestern offers need-based financial aid to a limited number of international students. If you're admitted and demonstrate financial need, the university guarantees to meet 100% of that need with a combination of loans, grants, and work-study opportunities. Make sure when you're applying to explicitly indicate your interest in financial aid on the Common Application, as Northwestern only gives out need-based aid to those who declare interest during the application process.

One unique aspect of Northwestern's policy is that your financial need is evaluated when you first apply—and this amount is guaranteed for all four years of your undergraduate career, assuming your financial circumstances remain relatively consistent. That being said, if you do not apply for financial aid as an incoming first-year student, you cannot apply for aid in future years, so it's crucial to apply right from the start if you think you might need assistance.

In addition to institutional aid, you might also want to look into external scholarships specifically designed for international students. Resources like CollegeBoard, Fastweb, and Appily all offer databases where you can search for scholarships that match your specific criteria.

Regarding special considerations while applying, make sure you've reviewed Northwestern's English proficiency requirements, as you might need to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test if English isn't your primary language. The typical TOEFL score for admitted students is 100 and above. You should focus on showcasing not only your academic abilities but also your unique experiences and perspectives as an international student, as Northwestern values a diverse student body. This can be reflected in your essays and other parts of your application material. Lastly, remember to start the visa process early once you've been admitted, as it can sometimes be time-consuming. Good luck!
