Is UC Irvine a good choice for STEM majors?

I'm considering UC Irvine and I'm particularly interested in their STEM programs. How strong are their science and engineering departments, and what research opportunities do they offer for undergrads? Any current student perspectives?

UC Irvine has a strong reputation in STEM fields and could certainly be an excellent choice depending on your specific interests. Their School of Engineering is home to several departments, including Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, among others. UC Irvine's School of Physical Sciences is equally impressive, with departments such as Earth System Science, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy.

When it comes to research, there are many opportunities available for undergraduate students. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is a particularly notable one. It offers financial assistance for research projects and travel to conferences to present findings, as well as workshops on how to conduct research. Additionally, many professors actively encourage undergraduate students to participate in their research activities.

Speaking to the overall experience, UC Irvine has a diverse student body and a strong emphasis on collaboration, both within and between departments, which lends itself well to interdisciplinary study and research. Many students also appreciate the proximity to beautiful natural areas like the coast and the opportunities for outdoor activities. However, the competitive nature of STEM fields means that you should always consider your fit and career goals when choosing a university.
