Can You Get a Business Job in High School?

I'm really interested in business and would love to get a job in that field while still in high school. Are there any opportunities specifically for high school students in the business industry, and where should I start looking?

While business jobs that require a degree or extensive experience might not be available for high school students, there are plenty of ways you can begin to gain practical experience in the field. It could be as simple as applying for entry-level positions in companies, or you may look into internships or volunteer opportunities that expose you to business operations.

1. Entry-level positions: A number of local businesses might have open positions that you could apply for. Working in retail or in customer service roles not only provides great foundation skills but also insights into how businesses operate day-to-day. Reception roles within companies could also be a good start.

2. Internships: Companies may offer internships for high school students. While most might be unpaid or offer a small stipend, they can offer invaluable experience. You can work on projects, contribute to a team, and see what professional life looks like.

3. Job shadowing: This gives you the chance to observe professionals in your field of interest on a typical day of work. Reach out to professionals in your network and ask if they could host you for a day or a week.

4. Volunteering: Non-profit organizations often need volunteers to help manage fundraisers, marketing, social media, and more. This can give you exposure to fundamental business skills.

5. Start Your Own Business: This could be a side gig, like dog walking, lawn care, or reselling items online. This not only provides real-world experience in managing a business but also shows initiative and entrepreneurship to future employers and colleges.

Once you have chosen a starting point, begin reaching out to local businesses, looking for internships online, and contacting professionals for shadowing opportunities. Remember not to hesitate to tap into your personal network as well. Relatives, teachers, and even friends may know of opportunities or people in the business world who might be able to offer guidance or opportunities worth considering. Good luck with your journey!
