What are the cons of starting a career immediately after high school?

I'm considering jumping straight into the workforce after high school instead of going to college. But I've heard there are some downsides to getting a job without further education. Can anyone share what the cons might be?

While entering the workforce straight after high school may have its perks, there are potential cons to consider as well.

One of the biggest downsides can be limited job opportunities. Often, higher education expands your career prospects and can open up more specialized and high-paying fields. Without a college degree, you may find your options more confined to entry-level or physically demanding jobs.

Job stability may also be potentially less without a college degree. Employees who have only graduated high school tend to be more vulnerable when economic recessions or layoffs occur.

Another drawback is a likely lower earning potential. On average, individuals with a college degree tend to earn more than those without. Throughout their working life, bachelor's degree holders, on average, earn about $2.27 million, far more than the $1.30 million that high school diploma holders typically earn.

Lastly, a lack of college education could limit your access to professional networks. Many opportunities can come from the connections you make in college, whether from professors, internships, or fellow students. This networking can help secure jobs and promotions.

That said, these potential cons don't apply to every situation, and you should consider variables such as your career interests, work readiness, and alternative paths like apprenticeships or vocational training programs. Every path has its own merits and challenges, and it's important to do what feels best for you in your unique situation.
