I'm thinking about applying to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. For current students or anyone familiar with the place, what's the campus culture like? Are there any standout programs or things to do around town?
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL) is known for its inviting and community-oriented environment. Many students often comment on the friendly, laid-back atmosphere on campus, which is fostered, in part, by the university's dedicated faculty and smaller campus size.
Student involvement is also a big part of the campus culture at UWL. With over 200 student organizations, individuals can find a myriad of ways to get involved, make new friends, and find their home away from home. Greek life, student government, and service organizations are quite popular among students.
Beyond the social scene, UWL is also known for its standout programs in physical therapy, exercise and sports science, and environmental science which are very well-regarded. There's the River Studies Center that provides research opportunities to environmental science students.
In terms of the La Crosse area, you're in for a treat as well. La Crosse is surrounded by beautiful natural settings for hiking, skiing, and biking. The Mississippi River and the beautiful bluffs offer nice options for outdoor experiences. The downtown area is also a hot spot for students, offering a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities. We can't miss the seasonal Oktoberfest, a popular local event with parades, food, music, and indeed, beer!
As with any college decision, you'll want to make sure UWL's vibe aligns with your personal interests and learning style by possibly visiting the campus, speaking to current students and faculty, or participating in a virtual tour. Remember, what feels “right” can vary greatly from student to student!
