Jobs for high school students interested in medicine?

I'm really interested in pursuing a career in medicine. What jobs or volunteer opportunities should I look for as a high school student to gain relevant experience?

While direct healthcare jobs for high school students are mainly limited due to age and credentialing, there are several ways you can gain experience in the medical field indirectly.

1. Hospital Volunteering: Many hospitals and clinics allow high school students to volunteer. Although you might not be engaged in direct patient care, you'll gain exposure to the health care environment. You could work at the help desk, in the gift shop, or in patient transport.

2. Summer Medical Programs: These can be a great opportunity to learn and practice basic medical skills, gain exposure to various health careers, and usually involve job-shadowing, or even workshops led by professionals in the field. Look for ones run by local hospitals, universities, or organizations.

3. Pharmacy Tech: In some states, this job requires minimal certification and training, and you might be able to get a position or an internship at a local pharmacy. This is a good option because it involves direct interaction with patients and physicians.

4. EMT Training: Several programs offer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training to high school students aged 18 or more. After training, you can volunteer or work part-time in an ambulance agency, fire department, or hospital.

5. Work in a Senior-Care Facility: Assisting in a senior care facility or partaking in a companion program for elderly patients can help you understand patient care from another angle.

6. Medical Research: If you're interested in the scientific or academic side of medicine, consider looking for an opportunity to assist with medical research at a local university or science lab.
