How to start building a job resume while still in high school?

I know having a strong resume is important, but I'm still in high school and don't have much experience. What should I include to make my resume stand out when applying for part-time jobs or internships?

There is a lot you can do to build an impressive resume even while in high school. Making use of available resources and capitalizing on your strengths is key.

1. Highlight Your Skillset: List any specific skills that might benefit you in the jobs you are applying for. These could be technical skills like proficiency in a certain software or more soft skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability. Be sure to provide evidence for your skills where possible, such as through public speaking contests (communication), group projects (teamwork), or coding classes (technical software skills).

2. Academic Achievements: Include your GPA (if it's strong), notable coursework relevant to the job you're applying for, and any academic honors or awards you've earned.

3. Extracurricular Activities: This can include school clubs, sports teams, volunteer work, or student council participation. These activities demonstrate teamwork, leadership, dedication, and other sought-after skills.

4. Work or Internship Experience: If you have had any jobs, internships, or even significant volunteering experiences (like a long-term commitment at a hospital or tutoring program), be sure to list those. Even seemingly unrelated experiences like babysitting show responsibility, time management, and other important skills.

5. Projects: Include any significant projects you’ve completed. For example, if you've designed a game app for school or have worked on a novel in your spare time, you should include it. It signals your ability to stay dedicated and complete a task, and it can also display creativity and initiative.

6. Professional Development: If you take part in any workshops, seminars, or online courses, list these too. This shows your willingness to learn beyond the school curriculum and develop needed skills.

Remember to keep your resume clean, concise, and consistent. Be honest about your skills and experiences and tailor your resume to each job posting by aligning your skills and experiences with the job description requirements. Lastly, make sure to proofread for any errors.

As you continue to gain more experiences and skills in high school, you will have more to add to your resume. But remember, everyone starts somewhere, and even the most experienced professionals were once in your shoes.
