What Are Some Good Jobs to Get After High School?

Graduation’s coming up, and I'm considering entering the workforce rather than college right away. Any recommendations for good jobs I can jump into right out of high school? Looking for something steady and with potential for growth.

Certainly! If you're thinking about going straight into the workforce, there are several career paths that offer potential for growth and stability without requiring a bachelor's degree. Keep in mind, though, that even though these roles do not require a four-year degree, they may still require you to undertake either some form of certification, training, or apprenticeship.

1. Skilled Trades: Trades like electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and HVAC technicians often require an apprenticeship period but can lead to a stable, well-paying career. Trade unions also often provide great resources and benefits for workers.

2. Emergency Services: Becoming a firefighter, EMT, or police officer is another option. Some positions may require you to undergo specific traineeships or certification programs after high school.

3. Real Estate Agent: If you're a people person and enjoy sales, you could consider becoming a real estate agent. Most states require a certification course to become licensed, but once you clear that hurdle, you can start earning commissions on home sales.

4. IT Tech Support: Technology is very much a part of our lives and will continue to become more important. Without a degree, entry-level IT support positions are still available if you're interested in tech. You may find it beneficial to earn certain IT certifications to enhance your knowledge and competitiveness in the field.

5. Retail and Sales: You could consider manager-level jobs in the retail sector. Retail managers or assistant managers can earn a reasonable salary, and it can be a stepping stone to higher up positions.

6. Military: The military offers a variety of career routes, including technical skills and trades, healthcare, and administration. There are also benefits such as insurance, housing, and educational opportunities.

While these paths might not require a traditional college degree, that doesn't mean you stop learning after high school! Taking additional courses and earning certifications can help boost your career prospects. Don't forget to start building your professional network from the get-go. Your relationships with colleagues, managers, and other people in the industry can open up a lot of doors for you.
