Jobs in the medical field for high school students?

I've always been interested in working in the medical field, even while I'm still in high school. Are there any jobs or volunteer opportunities I can look into that might give me relevant experience?

There are several opportunities for high school students to gain experience in the medical field, ranging from volunteering to internships and even part-time jobs.

Volunteering at a local hospital or clinic is a common route many students take. Not only does this give you a peek into the healthcare world, but it also allows you to develop necessary skills like patient interaction and communication. Be sure to check regulations at each organization though, as some may have age restrictions for volunteers.

Another option is becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Some states allow high school students to pursue a CNA certification. As a CNA, you would be directly involved in patient care, which can provide invaluable experience if you're considering a health-related career.

Shadowing healthcare professionals is another opportunity. You can get a first-hand look at the day-to-day work in various medical roles, and easily compare different specializations. It's as simple as reaching out to healthcare providers in your community and asking if they allow students to shadow them.

Signing up for summer medical programs is also beneficial. These programs, such as those through the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) or local universities, often involve hands-on medical workshops or even clinical research opportunities.

Lastly, check if there are any health science courses available at your high school or nearby community college. These courses often offer medical field exposure and can sometimes culminate in an internship experience.

Remember, gaining experience in the medical field as a high school student not only allows you to explore your interests and confirm your career goals but also strengthens your college applications. Be sure to start early in these pursuits to get the most out of your high school years.
