Can high school students work at NYPL?

I'm really into books and thinking about working at the New York Public Library while I'm still in high school. Does anyone know if there are jobs or internships for high school students there?

Yes, it's definitely possible for high school students to get involved at the New York Public Library (NYPL)! The NYPL offers several programs and internships specifically designed for high school students. For example, the Teen Reading Ambassadors offers opportunities for teenagers to participate in the library's decision-making process and community service. The council meets weekly at selected branches throughout the year and accepts applications from teens ages 14-18.

Also, the NYPL System often hosts TeenLIVE events where they seek teen volunteers to assist with event setup and breakdown, guide attendees, and manage activity stations.

However, it's important to note that while these opportunities provide wonderful exposure to library work, they are largely unpaid volunteer roles. The NYPL does occasionally post job positions that high school students are eligible for, but these are relatively rare compared to the unpaid opportunities.

Keep an eye on the NYPL website or get in touch with your local branch to learn more about the opportunities available. You should also consider looking into part-time positions or internships at other libraries in New York City, as many libraries offer opportunities for high school students.
