What Does a High School Counselor Actually Do?

I'm considering a career in school counseling, but I'm not fully sure what high school counselors do day-to-day. Can anyone explain the specific duties and responsibilities of a school counselor in a high school setting?

High school counselors play a significant role in the educational system, and their duties can vary considerably by school. In a high school setting, the counselors are typically tasked with a broad spectrum of responsibilities that revolve around helping students achieve academic success and prepare for life beyond high school.

One of the central duties of a high school counselor is academic advising. They help students select appropriate courses, ensure they are on track to meet graduation requirements, and guide them in making future academic plans. This can involve making course schedules, helping students understand college prerequisites, and suggesting AP or other advanced courses when relevant.

High school counselors also provide college and career counseling. They help students discover various career paths and identify which colleges or training programs potentially suit their career goals. They often assist students in the college application process, which includes helping them understand entrance requirements, deadlines, financial aid, scholarships, and other important aspects. For some students, counselors may also provide guidance on choosing other paths after high school, like vocational schools, apprenticeships, or entry into the workforce.

Moreover, high school counselors are often involved in providing social and emotional support. They help identify students who might be dealing with issues like stress, mental health problems, or interpersonal conflicts and try to provide support, either through counseling sessions, referrals to outside resources, or wellness programs within the school. They may also lead or create programs on topics like bullying prevention, drug awareness, or stress management.

Finally, high school counselors often coordinate with other members of the school community. They may collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to develop strategies to help students succeed or cope with personal issues.

Bear in mind, the level of involvement in each of these areas can vary between school counselors based on the specific needs of their students and the school they work at, but these are some of the main roles you can expect in a high school counseling position.
