What does a high school librarian job entail?

I'm thinking about working at my school's library as a librarian. Can someone tell me what a high school librarian's job involves? I'd love to know about the daily responsibilities and the skills I'll need.

A high school librarian's role is quite diverse and goes beyond just lending out books. Here's a rundown:

1. Collection Management: Librarians are responsible for managing the library's resources, including selecting/procuring books, software, and other materials relevant to the school's curriculum and students' interests.

2. Organizing and Cataloguing Materials: You would be responsible for organizing all materials and data in a systemized, easy-to-access manner. This includes cataloging and arranging books, periodicals, and other resources. Using computer systems, databases, electronic catalogs, and other digitized tools is thus a crucial part of the job.

3. Reader's Advisory: Librarians often assist students in choosing reading materials appropriate for their age and reading level, and they also often provide recommendations based on their interests or assignments.

4. Instructional Support: This includes helping students learn how to use the library and researching tools efficiently. You may also work with teachers to provide materials and information for specific classes or assignments and occasionally instruct classes on information literacy and research skills.

5. Administration: Administrative tasks often range from maintaining budgets, tracking book damages and losses, and scheduling, to monitoring library usage, and evaluating the effectiveness of library services.

Soft skills that would be beneficial include communication skills since you will interact with students, teachers, and possibly parents regularly. Problem-solving skills are also important as you'll be assisting with research or information retrieval. A love for books and knowledge and being organized are also helpful attributes. Lastly, familiarity with databases, relevant software, and digital devices would be a plus as technology has become a significant part of library operations.
