Writing Jobs for High School Students

I'm really into writing and was wondering if there are any writing jobs out there for high school students. It'd be awesome to start building a portfolio while still in school. Anyone know where I can find such opportunities?

Absolutely, there are many writing jobs and opportunities for high school students to hone their skills and build a portfolio. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Start a blog: If you have a particular subject you're passionate about, consider starting a blog. It not only showcases your writing skills but also allows you to understand your area of interest better. Plus, managing a blog can also demonstrate initiative and drive, which is something colleges and future employers appreciate.

2. Freelancing: Websites like Upwork and Fiverr often have gigs for writers. You may need to start with lower-paying jobs, but as you gain more experience and positive reviews, you'll be able to charge more.

3. Submit to magazines and online platforms: Many online platforms and literature magazines accept and publish student work. Some, like Teen Ink and One Teen Story, are designed specifically for teenagers. If you're into journalism, Teen Vogue and other similar publications often have opportunities for young writers.

4. Writing competitions: Entering writing competitions is another way to hone your skills and potentially gain recognition (and sometimes cash prizes). Many competitions are free to enter and offer feedback to entrants.

5. Work with local newspapers or community newsletters: Local newspapers may have opportunities for young people, such as contributing to a teens section.

6. Internships: Look for internships with local publications, or even in the communications departments of local businesses. Websites like Internships.com can be helpful for finding these opportunities.

Even if these roles don't pay right away, they're valuable opportunities to practice your writing, build your portfolio, and get your work seen by others. Remember, the most important part is that you're writing regularly and continuing to improve your skills.
