Are there entry-level accounting jobs for someone with just a high school diploma?

I'm finishing high school soon and really interested in accounting. Are there any entry-level accounting jobs that only require a high school diploma? How should I prepare if I want to get into this field right after graduation?

There are indeed entry-level accounting jobs available for individuals with only a high school diploma. Here are a few possibilities:

1. Bookkeeping Clerks: They maintain financial records, posting debits and credits, produce invoices, and manage payroll. Some companies offer on-the-job training for bookkeeping clerks.

2. Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerks: As an accounts payable clerk, you can be responsible for paying company bills. As an accounts receivable clerk, you would be responsible for processing incoming payments.

3. Accounting Assistants: They generally handle administrative, bookkeeping, and basic accounting tasks for senior accountants.

Now, while these jobs do not require more than a high school diploma, competition can be fierce and further education or relevant courses can help you stand out.

Consider taking some basic accounting courses, either at a local community college or online. Additionally, mastery of software like Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks could also make your resume stand out. Many online platforms offer courses in these programs at varying skill levels.

Certification as a bookkeeper from a recognized body can also enhance your job prospects. The Certified Bookkeeper (CB) credential, offered by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, is a good one. It requires two years of professional bookkeeping experience, but you can study and sit for the exam while getting your experience.

Remember that while starting in an accounting career without a degree is possible, continuing education will ultimately increase your salary potential and open up more opportunities in the long run. You may want to consider continuing your education, perhaps through night or online courses, while you are working in an entry-level position.

And lastly, don't forget to network. Regardless of the industry, knowing people can be key when securing a job. Reach out to any contacts you might have in the accounting field, attend local networking events, or join relevant LinkedIn groups.

I hope this helps and best of luck with your career in accounting!
