Dental Assistant Jobs for High School Students?

I'm a junior in high school and really interested in the dental field. Are there any opportunities out there for high school students to get a head start as a dental assistant? What kind of experience or skills should I try to build?

While it's great to hear about your early interest in dentistry, it's important to note that the role of a dental assistant typically requires some post-secondary education and certain certifications, which may not be achievable while you are still in high school. However, that doesn't mean there aren't opportunities for you to start building your knowledge and skills in the dental field.

Shadowing or interning at a dental office would be an invaluable experience. It would give you the opportunity to observe the daily operations of the field, gain an understanding of the responsibilities of a dental assistant, and start creating a necessary network. Although direct patient care may be off-limits due to lack of certification, there are always tasks that need managing in a dental office.

Another pathway could be to take courses related to the field. Depending on your school's course offerings, biology, chemistry, and health-related courses would be beneficial. Many high schools also offer career and technical education (CTE) programs. If your school or a nearby school offers a healthcare-focused CTE, that could be another way for you to gain knowledge and skills.

Volunteering is another avenue to explore. You could volunteer at a local health-related nonprofit or event, or even at a dental school's community outreach programs which often run dental health fairs, volunteering will expose you to the healthcare environment, and help you become familiar with dental procedures and patient care routines.

On the skills side, look to build on your communication and interpersonal skills. Dental assistants are often the initial point of contact for patients and play a significant role in creating a comfortable and friendly environment. Also, attention to detail is crucial due to the intricate nature of dental work.

Remember that any step you take toward this career now is a step in the right direction. Whether you're shadowing, volunteering, or learning in a more formal setting, each experience will equip you with understanding and skills beneficial for your future career in dentistry.
