Value of online community service?

With the pandemic, I'm thinking of doing some online community service. Is it considered legitimate and valuable in college apps, or should I look for in-person opportunities?

Online community service can certainly be considered legitimate and valuable in college applications. Colleges understand that the pandemic has significantly impacted the usual avenues for community service, and they are likely to recognize the efforts of students who have adapted to virtual environments. Additionally, online volunteering can often help you reach a broader audience or have an impact in a way that might not be possible in person.

That being said, it's essential to focus on quality over quantity when it comes to community service. Consider finding a cause or organization that aligns with your interests, and devote your time to making a substantial impact. Having a meaningful connection to the work you do online will also enable you to discuss your experiences more effectively in your college essays. While in-person opportunities are slowly becoming more available, don't shy away from online community service if you feel like you can make a real difference in that space.
