Advice on UC Davis Colleges

I'm looking at UC Davis and heard they have a college system. Can anyone explain what that means and how it affects student life? Also, which colleges at UC Davis are known for having strong communities or specific programs?

UC Davis, like some other universities, does have a structure that is often referred to as a 'college system'. However, this system is a bit different from the residential college systems you might see at universities like Oxford or Yale. At UC Davis, the university is divided into four main academic colleges: The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, The College of Biological Sciences, The College of Letters and Science, and The College of Engineering.

These colleges function as broad academic divisions for different fields of study. For instance, if you're a student interested in pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences, you would be enrolled in The College of Biological Sciences. Each college has its own deans, faculty, and distinguished academic programs.

However, irrespective of the college you are enrolled in, as a UC Davis student, you'd have access to courses across all four colleges. This allows you to potentially engage in interdisciplinary study and broaden your perspectives.

As far as communities go, each college does have its own communities formed from relevant student clubs, research opportunities, and professional development programs. However, social life at UC Davis is not strictly determined by one's academic college. Instead, students often find community through extracurricular activities, student organizations, sport teams, residence halls, and more.

Each college at UC Davis is strong in its respective areas. For instance, UC Davis's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is known as one of the best of its kind globally, particularly strong in fields like animal science, plant science, and environmental policy analysis. On the other hand, The College of Engineering has strong programs in many areas, including civil and environmental engineering and biological systems engineering.

It's important to review the programs within each college to discover which aligns best with your academic and career goals. And remember, the college you choose doesn't limit your social opportunities on campus. You can engage in a diverse range of communities across UC Davis.
