How competitive is the computer science program at UCLA?

I'm really interested in applying to UCLA for computer science, but I've heard it's pretty competitive. Can anyone share how challenging it is to get accepted into this program and what I might need to stand out?

UCLA's Computer Science program is indeed quite competitive. For admission, the university principally considers: your GPA, course rigor and the selection of classes especially in fields related to Computer Science like math and science, relevancy and commitment towards extracurricular activities, and your personal insight essays.

Your profile needs to show a deep interest in Computer Science, which could be achieved by excelling in related classes, participating in computer science or coding clubs, or doing projects or internships related to the field. Participating in programming contests or starting your own programming-related projects could be advantageous, as well. These activities will help your application stand out as they can show initiative, dedication and passion to the field.

In terms of academic metrics, you'd typically want a GPA that's on the higher end. Keep in mind that UCLA does not solely take your academic achievements into account, but also considers your extracurricular experiences and your personal insight essays.

While crafting your personal insight essays, focus on experiences that have shaped your interest in Computer Science. You may choose to discuss any unique experiences, initiatives, or projects that specifically influenced your desire to study this field. This is your opportunity to present a more personal side and how you could bring a unique perspective to the program.

To summarize, to increase your chance of acceptance into UCLA's competitive Computer Science program, strive for academic excellence (particularly in technical fields), show evidence of commitment and passion to the field through relevant extracurriculars, internships, clubs or personal projects, and finally, depict your journey and your unique perspectives in your essays. Good luck with your application!
