Which colleges are best for a Mechanical Engineering degree?

I'm a high school junior interested in studying mechanical engineering in college. Can anyone recommend colleges that have a strong mechanical engineering program? Bonus points if you've had personal experiences or know someone who's gone through the program!

There are several excellent colleges recognized for their strong mechanical engineering (ME) programs. Here are several notable mentions:

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): Known for its world-renowned College of Engineering, MIT often ranks at the top for its mechanical engineering program. The department offers a hands-on approach with ample research opportunities.

2. Stanford University: Its Mechanical Engineering department hones a balance between practical and theoretical training. It promotes interdisciplinary work, which can equip you with a wider range of skills and knowledge.

3. University of California--Berkeley (UC Berkeley): Its College of Engineering is another top choice for future ME students.

4. Harvard University: While known for liberal arts and sciences, Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers a robust ME degree program. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged here as well.

5. University of Michigan--Ann Arbor: The College of Engineering provides a well-rounded ME degree program that focuses on cultivating creativity and analytical skills.

6. California Institute of Technology (Caltech): Known for its compact size and high research output, Caltech provides ample research opportunities in mechanical engineering.

7. Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech): It has one of the largest ME departments in the U.S. with numerous concentrations which can give you more options to explore your interests.

While these institutions offer top programs for mechanical engineering, remember that the "best" school will heavily rely on your specific needs and goals, including location, cost, extracurricular activities, and campus culture. Hence, be sure you choose a university not just based on academic prestige, but also on how well you think you'd fit in there.
