Choosing Between Community Colleges in Portland?

I'm considering attending a community college in Portland after high school. Does anyone have recommendations or insights on the community colleges there? How do they compare when it comes to programs and campus life?

In Portland, the two most notable community colleges are Portland Community College (PCC) and Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC). Both are great options, so it would largely come down to which college offers programs that align most with your career or education goals, and which campus environment you find most beneficial to your learning and social needs.

Starting with Portland Community College, it is the largest community college in Oregon and offers over 90 programs of study, which can lead to a wide variety of career paths. It has four main campuses in different areas of the city, and each one has its unique feel and special programs. For example, PCC's Southeast Campus has a strong focus on career-technical programs, including computer technology. PCC also has a robust student life with clubs, athletics, and student government opportunities.

On the other hand, Mt. Hood Community College is smaller and may offer a more intimate, community feel. It offers over 120 professional and technical programs, including unique offerings like Cybersecurity and Wilderness Leadership. MHCC also seems to have more outdoor-focused programs and activities, with its Outdoor Recreation Leadership degree and its location near the mountains and the Sandy River. Its campus environment also includes student clubs and government, as well as wellness programs and recreational activities.

Both colleges offer plenty of resources to students and would be strong choices. I'd recommend looking more in-depth at the specific programs of interest at each college to help make your decision. Consider arranging a campus visit, either virtually or physically, to get a better sense of the campus environment, engage with current students, faculty, and support programs. This can help you gain a firsthand insight into the dynamics of campus life.
