What are some of the top design programs in the US?

I'm passionate about design and looking into colleges. Which design programs in the US are considered the best? A mix of traditional and digital design strengths would be ideal. Any personal experiences would also be appreciated!

Design is a broad field and programs can vary significantly depending on the area of specialization - be that graphic design, industrial design, fashion design, interaction design, or interior design. Accounting for this, some schools are often cited for their strong, well-rounded programs in the field of design, both traditional and digital.

1. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD): Known for its strength in multiple design disciplines, it's notably one of the best in the nation for Graphic Design and Industrial Design. Many alumni have gone on to incredibly successful careers in various design fields.

2. Carnegie Mellon University: CMU has a strong design program with a unique approach that includes supportive studios, seminars, and lecture courses.

3. Pratt Institute: Located in Brooklyn, NY, Pratt Institute is highly regarded for its programs in Interior Design and Industrial Design.

4. Parsons School of Design: Part of The New School in NYC, Parsons is widely recognized for its programs in various design fields.

5. California Institute of the Arts (CalArts): While more known for its animation program, CalArts also offers rigorous programs in Graphic Design, both at the undergrad and graduate levels.

6. ArtCenter College of Design: Located in Pasadena, CA, ArtCenter is often lauded for its programs in industrial design and graphics, among others.

These schools all have renowned faculty and offer both breadth and depth in their design curricula. As a tip, thoroughly research these programs, paying attention to the courses on offer, the faculty, alumni success, links with industry, and opportunities for internships or work placements. You should ideally also compare the facilities available, such as design studios, digital labs, and other technological resources, as these can be crucial for your studies in design.

Remember that the "best" program will largely depend on your personal goals and aspirations in the field of design. It may be beneficial to narrow down your specific interests within the design to help you choose the right program. All the best in your search!
