What's KU admission process like?

I'm looking into applying to KU, and I'm curious about their admissions process. Is it super competitive? Any GPA or test score requirements I should be aware of? How does it compare to other universities?

The University of Kansas (KU) uses a comprehensive review process for its admissions, which means they consider a wide range of factors beyond just GPA and test scores. They'll look at your high school course selection, extracurricular activities, application essays, and letters of recommendation.

As for academic qualifications, KU uses an Assurance Admission standard where you're guaranteed admission if you meet certain GPA and test score parameters. If you're a Kansas resident, you need to have an ACT score of 21+ (or SAT equivalent) and a GPA of 3.25+. Out-of-state applicants need an ACT score of 24+ (or SAT equivalent) and a GPA of 3.25+. But, if you're interested in a specific program within the university, each school or department may have their own set of requirements or additional criteria.

For test scores, keep in mind that starting from the 2022/2023 cycle, KU has made standardized test scores optional for admission. This means you can choose whether to submit your SAT or ACT scores as part of your application. Nevertheless, if you have strong scores, it might be beneficial to submit them.

Compared to other universities, KU is moderately competitive. The fall 2024 freshman class had a middle 50% ACT range of 21-27 and an average GPA of 3.65.

Lastly, make sure to check their deadlines: priority date for scholarship consideration is December 1st and their regular application deadline is February 1st. You'll apply through the Common Application or Coalition Application.

Overall, a strong academic record will definitely work in your favor, but KU looks at the complete picture of every student. Additionally, if you have a specific area of interest, tying that in with your application essay and ties to the school can add additional weight to your application.
