How does Cal State LA compare?

I'm looking into Cal State LA and wondering how it stacks up academically and socially. Does it offer a strong program for engineering majors? And what's the general vibe like on campus?

Cal State LA has a solid reputation for its engineering program. The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology offers a variety of different engineering majors including Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Aviation Administration. As an engineering student, you will benefit from research lab opportunities, cooperative education programs, and interested faculty mentors.

The class sizes tend to be smaller compared to larger universities, which might help you get personalized attention from faculty. This can be a great advantage, especially in engineering courses where hands-on learning and lab work are crucial.

In terms of campus life, like many colleges, there's a range of activities that cater to different interests. There are over 170 student-led clubs and organizations, from academic and professional clubs to cultural and recreational organizations. However, it's worth noting that Cal State LA is considered a commuter school, so the campus might be quieter on weekends when students who live off-campus go home. This could make for a more low-key social scene compared to more residential-focused colleges.

The school is located in East Los Angeles, providing access to a dynamic urban environment with plenty of opportunities for internships, cultural experiences, and a variety of food and entertainment options. However, the immediate surrounding area can be a bit industrial, so the actual campus itself provides more of the green space and amenities.

Overall, Cal State LA can be a good fit if you're looking for solid academics in a commuter school environment and value the opportunity to live in LA. As with any college, visiting the campus or speaking to current students can give you an even better sense of the atmosphere and whether it might be a good match for you.
