What should I know about the University of the South, Tennessee?

I've heard a bit about the University of the South in Tennessee. Is it worth looking into? What are some unique aspects of their programs or campus life?

The University of the South, also known as Sewanee, is a private, liberal arts college located in Sewanee, Tennessee. It's known for its stunning 13,000-acre campus, affectionately referred to as "The Domain." The campus is surrounded by mountainous terrain, forests, and lakes, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.

Sewanee offers undergraduate degrees in over 36 disciplines with the most popular being Economics, Biology, English, Psychology, and History. The school has a strong dedication to liberal arts and sciences education, and emphasizes close interaction between students and faculty. With an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students can expect small class sizes and personalized attention.

Sewanee is also known for its distinctive policies. One such policy is the Sewanee Pledge, which guarantees every student the opportunity to engage in at least one funded internship or research opportunity. This means that chances for hands-on learning and experiential education are quite high at this university.

As for campus life, the school is known for its spirited traditions, such as its vibrant academic gown tradition, where students wear academic gowns to class, and the honor code, which promotes academic integrity. The sporting scene is also diverse with 24 varsity sports teams in the Southern Athletic Association.

However, one unique aspect of Sewanee lifestyle is the concept of "Sewanee Time" which jokingly extracts out student's usage of time where everything slows down a bit, a nod to the slow, communal Southern lifestyle that is reflective in the overall community of the school.

Like any university, whether Sewanee would be a good fit for you would depend on your individual needs and interests. If you value a tight-knit community, individualized attention from professors, outdoor activities, and a strong sense of tradition, Sewanee might be worth a more thorough look.
