What is known about UMich's CS ranking?

I'm considering majoring in computer science and I've heard good things about the University of Michigan. Can anyone speak to how its CS program ranks compared to others? Trying to map out my potential reach schools.

The University of Michigan's Computer Science program is indeed highly esteemed, and it consistently ranks among the top computer science programs in the country--and even the world. In recent years, UMich's undergraduate CS program has been ranked within the top 10 to top 15 range by various well-known ranking reports. It's notable for a robust curriculum that includes foundations in theory, systems, and applications, as well as opportunities for specialization.

Additionally, UMich's College of Engineering, which houses the CS department, provides opportunities for research even at the undergraduate level. Many students have attested to the benefits of this, as it lends them practical experience that can be invaluable for their future careers or for graduate studies.

However, remember that rankings are just one piece of the puzzle while considering colleges, and other factors such as location, size, culture, and financial considerations are important too. Research everything you can about the program and university to make sure it'll be a good fit for you.

Also, remember that you'll be compared to other applicants interested in the same major, so being interested in a competitive program like CS could make admission more challenging. Try to distinguish yourself with a strong spike in your field of interest, perhaps through significant computer science-related extracurricular activities or projects.

This should go without saying but prepare yourself for the rigor of UMich's Computer Science major, as it is known for its intensive course load and high demands, requiring a firm dedication to the discipline and a strong work ethic. This rigor, however, is what produces the program's excellent reputation and its graduates' preparedness for the job market or further studies.
