What's the deal with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill admissions?

I'm curious about applying to UNC Chapel Hill. Can anyone share insights on what their admissions process is like? Any tips for a well-rounded application would be super helpful! I'm really interested in their programs too, so info on that is welcome.

UNC Chapel Hill is a public research university renowned for its strong programs across different disciplines, including business, journalism and mass communication, and health sciences. It's a part of the highly regarded University of North Carolina system.

Their admission process is competitive, especially for out-of-state students, given that a significant percentage of their admit class is required by law to be from North Carolina. They use a holistic review process, which means they take into account all parts of your application—grades, rigor of your high school coursework, test scores, essays, extracurricular involvement, and any other supplementary materials—when making admissions decisions.

Starting with your academics, aim to have a strong GPA and a rigorous course load, especially in the subjects related to the program you're applying to. This will demonstrate that you are serious about your education and have challenged yourself academically. However, keep in mind that test scores aren't the end-all-be-all. Like many schools, UNC Chapel Hill is test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, allowing you to decide whether to submit SAT or ACT scores. If you believe your test scores don't represent your academic potential, you might elect not to submit them.

The university uses the Common Application, which means that in addition to your academic and extracurricular information, you'll complete a personal statement and answer supplementary essay questions specific to UNC Chapel Hill. These essays provide a valuable opportunity for you to share aspects of your personality, experiences, or analytical thought that may not be evident from other parts of your application. Avoid cliche topics and instead, share a unique story or perspective that gives the admissions officers insight into who you are.

For extracurricular activities, involvement in a few activities where you've demonstrated a high level of commitment, leadership or achievement is usually more impressive than dabbling in a lot of activities but not going in depth. UNC Chapel Hill, like many top schools, prefers students with a "spike," which means students who have a developed passion or specialty, rather than a well-rounded student.

Lastly, consider how UNC's programs align with your interests and long-term goals. Showcasing how you would take advantage of their programs in your application and essays could demonstrate your fit and interest in the school. UNC Chapel Hill has a wide range of majors and programs, but if you're particularly interested in an area, research that department to see what opportunities and courses are available.

Best of luck with your application to UNC Chapel Hill!
