Exploring Schools for Animation: Recommendations?

I'm really interested in pursuing a career in animation and want to find the best colleges for this field. What schools would you recommend for someone passionate about animation, and why? Personal experiences would be awesome!

Given that you're interested in Animation, a few institutions come to mind that have very strong programs.

First up is California Institute of the Arts, often referred to as CalArts. Based in Los Angeles, the birthplace of the American animation industry, it provides students with access to a wealth of resources and industry connections. CalArts offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in character animation, and many of its graduates have found success in the industry. It's no surprise to find CalArts alumni at the helm of many popular animations.

Ringing in at second is the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). RISD has a very strong program in Illustration and Film/Animation/Video (FAV). The FAV program is particularly notable for its interdisciplinary, allowing students to explore film, animation, video, and sound disciplines.

Third, we have the University of Southern California (USC). In particular, its John C. Hench Division of Animation and Digital Arts is well-regarded. Based in one of the global hubs of film and animation, USC also provides its students fantastic internship and networking opportunities.

Lastly, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, deserves mention. Offering both a BFA and MFA in Digital Animation and Motion Arts, its programs are designed to connect students with the pulse of the animation industry.

Each school varies in its pedagogical approach and surrounding environment. For instance, RISD and Pratt may be better suited for a student seeking a more holistic art education, while USC and CalArts may be more appropriate for someone looking for a focused industry preparation amidst a bustling film and animation scene.

Remember to take into account the entire college experience, not just the animation program. This includes the location, class size, campus culture, and finance, among others. Furthermore, it can be beneficial to check the portfolios of recent graduates or to reach out to alumni, who can provide a first-hand view of the program's effectiveness and how it has shaped their career paths.
