What's it like attending Norwich University in VT?

I'm looking into military colleges and came across Norwich University in Vermont. How rigorous is the military training there, and what's the campus culture like?

Norwich University is a unique institution, as it is the oldest private military college in the United States and is recognized by the United States Departments of Defense as the birthplace of the ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps). This rich history definitely has an impact on the rigor and structure of the program.

In terms of military training, it's quite intensive, especially in your freshman year, also known as the Rook year. This year is filled with physical training, military instruction, and academic classes. After the conclusion of your Rook year, you'll attain the rank of private, and your responsibilities and leadership roles will increase each year. Despite the rigorous schedule, the program does value balance and the idea of a citizen-soldier, so there's time for recreational, academic, and social activities too.

As for the campus culture, it is a mix of military and civilian lifestyles. Though Norwich has a military program, it also has a traditional civilian population, creating a unique dynamic on campus. It's expected for everyone, regardless of whether they are in the Corps or not, to respect the values of integrity, honesty, and responsibility. This duality allows the student body to engage in a range of activities from traditional college experiences to unique military traditions and ceremonies. It's common to see uniformed Corps students studying or hanging out with civilian students.

The campus itself is located in Northfield, a small town in Vermont, and that brings an intimate, close-knit community feel to the school. The school size is relatively small, enhancing individual attention and rapport with professors and staff. The small town nature also brings beautiful landscapes and the appreciation of the four distinct seasons.

Nonetheless, it's important to note that Norwich's program is not for everyone, as the military lifestyle requires discipline, respect for authority, physical fitness, and a strong drive to succeed. To get a first-hand feel of the life at Norwich, consider attending its overnight visitation program or speaking with current students or recent alumni.
