What's campus life like at American University?

I'm thinking about applying to American University and am curious about what life on campus is like. Are there plenty of student activities, and how is the general vibe? Any student experiences would be helpful!

American University has a vibrant campus culture, marked by a hive of activities and a prevailing sense of community. Located in the heart of Washington D.C, it offers a unique blend of suburban campus life with all the benefits of a metropolitan city. Given its location, a notable aspect of the campus experience is the access to a multitude of cultural, political, and social experiences outside of the college campus.

Starting with curricular activities, the university offers over 200 clubs and organizations, providing a wide range of opportunities for students to explore their interests and cultivate their leadership and interpersonal skills. The academic community is highly engaged, with numerous scholarly events and guest-speaker series happening regularly.

The campus environment is quite active and inclusive. American University prides itself on socially conscious student activism, and it's common to see students participating in or organizing events, workshops, or rallies focused on topics such as environmental sustainability, empowerment, and social justice.

Athletics are another influential part of campus life, even though American University isn't recognized for a particularly competitive sports culture. The athletic teams, known as the Eagles, compete in the NCAA Division I Patriotic League and are enthusiastically supported by the student body. Intramural sports and fitness programs are also very popular.

One aspect that many students appreciate is the tight-knit feel of the community, despite being in a big city. The university also has a well-staffed, available counseling center and provides several supports for student wellness and success.

Keep in mind that due to its urban location, the housing can be more costly, and there’s also a bit of a mix between residential and commuter students which impacts the campus dynamics in its unique way.

In summary, if you're someone who enjoys an active, community-oriented campus with a strong focus on activism and enjoys the hustle and bustle of a major city, American University could be a great fit for you.
