Top Universities for Creative Writing?

I'm really into writing and want to find a college with a strong creative writing program. Which universities are the best for honing my skills and getting great mentorship? Any suggestions would be amazing!

Absolutely! There are quite a few universities renowned for their creative writing programs.

One standout is the University of Iowa, home to the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop for graduate students. Even as an undergraduate, you can benefit from the literary expertise on campus and the annual Iowa City Book Festival.

Johns Hopkins University also has a reputable program. Known for its strength in the sciences, Johns Hopkins also offers a top-tier Writing Seminars Bachelor's Degree, focusing on prose or poetry.

The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor is another wonderful option. Its Helen Zell Writers’ Program is highly respected among graduate programs, and undergraduate students can also tap into the literary resources and faculty wisdom.

Southern Methodist University (SMU) offers a Creative Writing specialization within the English major, and thanks to its realignment to the ACC, students can also learn from visiting writers at other ACC schools.

NYU is worth considering for its location in New York's literary scene, not to mention the renowned faculty and courses spanning playwrighting to children's fiction.

In the west, Stanford University's creative writing program has a robust offering, including opportunities through its Stegner Fellowship.

Columbia University, too, has a fabulous creative writing program, offering courses on specific genres like "Imagining the Past: Writing Historical Fiction."

While these schools offer some of the highest-regarded programs, it's crucial that the university you choose aligns with your individual interests and aspirations. Look at the individual courses offered, faculty in the program, notable alumni, opportunities for readings or publications, and how the overall university community will nourish your growth as a writer.
