What's campus life like at California Institute of Technology?

I'm super interested in Caltech for its strong STEM programs, but I also want to know about the campus vibe. How's the social scene and student life there?

Caltech offers a vibrant campus life and a unique way to experience college. The small undergraduate student body size may make the social scene feel more like a close-knit community rather than a typical large university. This can be a major perk for students who prefer smaller group interactions and enjoy strong bonds with peers and professors.

Caltech is organized into eight residential houses, each with its own culture and tradition. This unique house system plays a significant role in shaping the social scene at Caltech and you can expect several inter-house competitions, events, and traditions. Many students describe it as reminiscent of Harry Potter's Hogwarts, which builds a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging.

Academics are rigorous and Caltech students have a reputation for being highly driven and intellectually curious. Study groups are common and collaborative work is encouraged. The demanding coursework often leads to late-night study sessions and a high-stress environment during exam times especially.

On the fun side, Caltech has over a hundred clubs and organizations ranging from professional clubs, cultural organizations, and recreational sports teams. Student activities encompass a range of interests, such as performing arts, gaming, and outdoor activities to name a few. Many Caltech students also participate in research and internships facilitated by the school's proximity to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other industries.

However, given Caltech's strong emphasis on STEM, the social scene might not be as vibrant or as party-centered as at some larger universities. But, the students who thrive at Caltech are typically those who value friendly, collaborative environments, and who are passionate about science and engineering above all else.

To get a more personal understanding of Caltech's campus life, reaching out to current students or alumni or visiting campus could be very insightful. Don't hesitate to take advantage of any virtual tours or events if visiting in person is not feasible. Go "beavers"!
