Are SAT or ACT scores crucial for admission to Flagler College?

I'm preparing for my SATs and ACTs and was curious about how important these scores are for Flagler College. Can a great essay or extracurriculars offset lower test scores, or should I focus more on improving them?

Test scores used to be an integral part of most college applications; however, things have evolved in recent years. Flagler College, for example, has adopted a test-optional policy as of 2021. This means that you have the choice to include your SAT or ACT scores in your application but it's not a requirement.

So, if your SAT or ACT scores aren't as strong as you'd like them to be, you don't necessarily need to fret. Your application will be reviewed holistically, meaning the admissions officers will look at all components of your application—not just your test scores.

While this gives students who may not test well some breathing room, it also means that other aspects of the application such as high school GPA, rigorous coursework at the high school level, your statement, and extracurricular involvement, carry significant weight.

Flagler appreciates students who show engagement and commitment to their communities, as well as other qualities consistent with the college's principles and values. So, instead of focusing exclusively on improving your test scores, it might be more beneficial to invest time in crafting a compelling essay or enhancing your involvement in meaningful extracurricular activities. This could showcase your passions, commitment, and suitability for the college more effectively.

Of course, if you believe that your SAT or ACT scores could significantly improve with additional studying, it may still be valuable to do so. High scores could potentially open up more scholarship opportunities or make you a stronger candidate overall. Remember, in a test-optional setting, solid test scores can still be a significant asset.

The bottom line is to give your best effort in all areas of your application and the process as a whole. Good luck!
