What's the student population like at Columbia University?

I'm interested in knowing how many students attend Columbia University. Is it a large campus with a big student body, or is it more on the smaller side? Trying to get a sense of the size before applying.

Columbia University, as of fall 2024, has an undergraduate population of approximately 6,200 students. This makes it one of the smaller universities among the Ivy League and other selective institutions. That number doesn't include the graduate and professional programs, which boast a population of about 22,000 students, for a grand total of 28,200 across all disciplines and levels.

In terms of campus, Columbia's physical footprint in New York City's Morningside Heights neighborhood is somewhat limited, contributing to a dense, urban feel. With around 40 acres, the campus is relatively compact compared to other universities, further enhancing the sense of intimacy. As a Columbia student, you'll be studying amidst the hustle and bustle of one of the world's most vibrant cities, which is a cultural asset that many students find appealing.

With a smaller undergraduate division, you may find more close-knit communities and smaller class sizes, which could provide a stronger sense of community and more opportunities for personalized learning. Keep in mind that while the undergraduate population is modest, Columbia has a larger graduate presence, and they often share resources and facilities with undergraduates. Therefore, while it might feel small in some aspects, you are also part of a large, diverse intellectual community.
