What are some good small universities with strong programs?

I'm interested in small universities where I can get personal attention from professors. If anyone has insights into small schools with strong programs in the humanities or social sciences, I'd really appreciate it!

Absolutely – smaller universities can often provide a more intimate, supportive learning environment with more personal attention from professors, which is really valuable.

A good place to start would be liberal arts institutions as they, by definition, value a well-rounded education—spanning a breadth of subjects including humanities and social sciences. Here are a few universities with robust programs in the humanities and/or social sciences:

1. Amherst College: Amherst is known for its open curriculum, which allows students a lot of flexibility in their coursework. This makes the college a great option if you're interested in the humanities or social sciences, but also want to explore other interests.

2. Claremont McKenna College: As a part of the Claremont Colleges consortium, it provides access to a vast array of courses across multiple institutions while retaining the feeling of a small university. CMC particularly shines in political science and economics.

3. Swarthmore College: Swarthmore is known for its rigorous academics and strong programs in social sciences. The school particularly excels in fields like political science, sociology, and anthropology.

4. Williams College: Williams consistently ranks high among liberal arts colleges and offers top-notch humanities and social science programs. There's a unique tutorial-style teaching method that fosters in-depth learning.

5. Colgate University: Colgate University is particularly strong in English and psychology, along with offering a variety of courses in the social sciences.

6. Bowdoin College: Known for its strong department in humanities, Bowdoin offers courses in a variety of areas, including literature, art history, philosophy, and more.

Bear in mind, each of these universities has its own personality and vibes—it's important to look beyond rankings and academics to see if the community, culture, and surrounding area are right for you. Consider virtual tours, student testimonials, and networking with alumni/current students to get a sense of what life is like at these schools. The best 'fit' is usually a combination of strong academics and a community where you feel comfortable and supported.
