I'm really interested in studying aviation after high school, and I've heard about the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. Can anyone share what specific programs or degrees they offer? Also, what are the career prospects like after graduating from PIA?
The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) offers several avenues for studying aviation, with a focus on a hands-on, practical education that prepares students for real-world work in the field.
At the main campus in Pittsburgh, as well as at branch campuses in Youngstown, Ohio; Hagerstown, Maryland; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; the PIA offers an Aviation Maintenance Technology program. This is a 21-month program accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration, resulting in an Associate in Specialized Technology Degree. This program covers areas such as the fundamentals of aircraft mechanics, aviation electricity, aircraft instrument systems, and powerplant systems, setting students up to become an FAA-certified aviation mechanic.
In addition to the Aviation Maintenance Technology program, PIA also offers short-term training programs in Advanced Electronics and Avionics. This can supplement the main program or be taken in isolation depending on what you are interested in.
As for career prospects, PIA prides itself on a strong placement rate in the aviation industry. Graduates often find careers with major airlines, general aviation, corporate aircraft operations, and aircraft manufacturers. Additionally, the skills you'll learn in these programs can also be applied to careers outside of aviation, in industries such as manufacturing or power generation. The outlook for aviation mechanics and technicians is generally stable, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting modest growth in the field over the next decade.
However, it's always a good idea to do some further research on your own and perhaps reach out to the school's career services office to get more personalized information based on your specific interests and career goals.
