As I'm interested in applying, I wanted to know what current or past students think about Tulane University. Any particular strengths or weaknesses that stand out? I'm keen on understanding the academic and social atmosphere there!
Tulane has a strong commitment to community service (which is unique among colleges), and they do value those who show a similar commitment. The university offers a broad academic curriculum, with notably strong programs in Public Health, Architecture, Business (Freeman School of Business is well-regarded), and Biomedical Engineering.
Academically, it's known for a rigorous yet balanced workload. There seems to be a good mix of challenging classes, along with more "manageable" ones, which allows students some flexibility in juggling their schedule. That balance seems to be appreciated.
Students have praised the faculty for being accessible and supportive, and there are lots of research opportunities even for undergrads. The student-to-faculty ratio is 8:1.
The social atmosphere is very vibrant! New Orleans itself provides a rich culture and plenty of opportunities for exploration and fun. Keep in mind, although Tulane students do study hard, there's a reputation for a "work hard, play hard" culture, given the surrounding environment of the city.
Tulane's campus is often described as beautiful and walkable. The Mardi Gras celebrations are something really unique and to look forward to.
There are over 200 clubs and organizations which is great as you can find just about any group that matches your interests. Greek life is also a significant part of social life at Tulane.
A minor drawback that some students have noted is that diversity is somewhat lacking - but the administration has been making a push to improve on this front.
All things considered, Tulane offers a strong academic environment, lots of social opportunities, and a unique cultural immersion! It's certainly a unique University and offers a distinctly collaborative, committed, and energetic student body.
