I'm considering applying to Columbia University and I'm really curious about what campus life is like there. What are some standout features or daily experiences students enjoy? Would love to hear from anyone who's been there or currently attends.
Columbia University's campus life is teeming with diverse experiences owing to its unique location in New York City and rigorous academic environment. One thing to note is that Columbia fosters a strong sense of community despite being in such a bustling metropolis. While the urban environment is indeed a part of the Columbia experience, the campus itself feels separate and somewhat secluded, providing students with a more traditional college environment amidst the hustle and bustle.
An obvious standout feature is, of course, the city itself. Columbia is located in Morningside Heights, which is a student-friendly neighborhood with plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, and parks. Being in NYC, students also have access to countless opportunities for cultural enrichment, internships, and general exploration. Broadway shows, art galleries, food festivals, music concerts, and incomparable holiday celebrations are all within reach.
As with most universities, participation in clubs and organizations is a big part of campus life at Columbia. There is an entire week dedicated to club recruitment at the beginning of the academic year called the Activities Day, where you can get information about different clubs, meet club members, and decide which ones you'd like to join.
Another distinctive aspect of Columbia's campus life is the "Core Curriculum," a set of mandatory courses that are aimed at providing students with an in-depth understanding of a range of issues spanning literature, music, philosophy, and science. It seeks to create shared knowledge and experiences among Columbia students and it's not unusual for debates from a Core class to continue into dining halls.
Lastly, a tradition unique to Columbia is the "Midnight Breakfast" on the night before finals begin. Administrators serve breakfast to students as a fun way to alleviate stress.
Hopefully, this gives you a better understanding of what it's like to be a student at Columbia University!
