Is the University of Montana Western a good choice for hands-on learning?

I've heard that the University of Montana Western offers a unique, experiential learning approach. If anyone has attended, can you share your experiences? How effective is this method compared to traditional styles of teaching?

Absolutely, the University of Montana Western does have a unique approach to education that many students find beneficial. They utilize a method called Experience One (X1) where students take one class at a time for 18 days, then move on to the next class. This immersive approach allows students to focus on a single subject and truly dive into it.

Many students find this method effective for a few reasons. Firstly, it allows for deeper engagement with the material. You aren't juggling multiple subjects at once, so you can really concentrate on the topic at hand. Secondly, this approach often includes more hands-on, experiential learning opportunities. Because you have a full three weeks with one class, there's time to get out of the classroom and apply what you're learning. Lastly, smaller class sizes often associated with this approach lead to more individualized attention from professors.

However, like any teaching style, this model isn't perfect for everyone. Some students thrive in traditional semester-long classes and might find the pace of the X1 approach too quick. It's all about your personal learning style and what kind of environment you thrive in.

While I cannot offer personal experiences, many students do suggest visiting the campus or reaching out to current students to gain a more in-depth perspective before making a decision. It may also be useful to consider what you want to study and how well that subject lends itself to experiential learning. Overall, UMW's unique approach offers an alternative educational route that can be highly effective for those wanting more hands-on learning experiences.
