Insight on Furman University admissions?

I'm starting my college application journey, and Furman University is on my list. How selective is Furman when it comes to admissions? Are there specific characteristics or achievements they focus on when selecting applicants?

Furman University, based in Greenville, South Carolina, is a competitive liberal arts school. As per the most recent data, its acceptance rate is around 67%. But don't be deceived by this number, students accepted at Furman typically are academically strong, with an average high school GPA above 3.7.

When considering admissions, Furman University takes a holistic view of each student's application. This means they are considering all aspects of your high school career. From your academical track and grades to your extracurricular activities, recommendations, and personal essays.

Academically, they will look at your transcript to see the rigor of your classes in addition to your grades—taking rigorous classes (like APs, honors, IB etc.) and performing well in them indicates to the college that you are prepared for their rigorous coursework. Post Spring 2024, Furman has adopted a test-optional admission policy, which means you can choose whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores. If you choose not to submit test scores, your high school course rigor and GPA will carry more weight.

Beyond grades, Furman is interested in students who demonstrate purposeful involvement in a few select extracurricular activities, which can include work, family responsibilities, clubs, sports, volunteering, or virtually any other meaningful use of free time outside of class. The university wants to see that you've made a significant commitment to a few activities, ideally where you have shown or developed leadership skills.

Your personal essay also matters significantly. It's your opportunity to provide context for your academic and extracurricular achievements, and to show Furman what unique qualities you would bring to their university.

Finally, letters of recommendation can strengthen your application by giving the admissions committee an outside perspective on your abilities, character, and contributions.

All these aspects together make up a strong Furman application. It's all about presenting a holistic view of who you are and what you can bring to the Furman community.
