Thoughts on Applying to Exeter Phillips Academy?

Has anyone attended or applied to Exeter Phillips Academy? I'm considering it for high school and want to know more about the academic and social environment there. Is it really as intense as they say?

As a college admissions counselor, I've had the opportunity to interact with numerous students from Phillips Exeter Academy and can share some broad observations. Note that these are general pointers and personal experiences can slightly vary.

Phillips Exeter has an excellent reputation for a reason. The academic environment is indeed rigorous. One of the hallmarks of Phillips Exeter Academy is the teaching method known as Harkness, a style of teaching that encourages students to engage in discussions rather than being fed knowledge through traditional lectures. This type of learning can be very empowering for students and allow them to take an active role in their education.

However, it also demands significant preparation for each class, and the workload can be intensive. As part of the Harkness method, students are given a shared responsibility in setting the pace and direction of classroom discussions. This means that you’ll need to thoroughly understand and prepare for each topic in order to contribute effectively to these discussions.

Regarding the social environment, it's worth noting that Phillips Exeter is a boarding school and you might have fellow students from diverse international backgrounds. This can have a significant influence on shaping your worldview, providing you with a range of perspectives you might not get at a local high school.

Yes, the school is competitive but also collaborative. Many past students have said that while there is a strong emphasis on personal academic achievement, there's also a healthy understanding amongst students that everyone is in it together. In other words, it's more about "We're all in this challenging environment, let's help each other succeed," rather than cutthroat competition.

Keep in mind that by attending a boarding school, you must become used to living away from home which can be a major adjustment for some students. Besides, you'll need to adapt to their customs, rules, and other parts of dorm life.

Finally, remember that personal fit is vital. If you strive in challenging academic environments, enjoy intellectual discussions, and value diversity, Phillips Exeter could be a fantastic fit. But if you prefer a more laid-back environment or more direct teaching methods, it might not be the best fit. It's crucial to visit the school if possible, reach out to current students or alumni, or participate in open houses to get a true feel for the school's culture. After all, high school is a time for both academic and personal growth. Choose a place where you believe you can thrive in both areas.
