Which public colleges in California are considered the best?

I'm thinking about staying in-state for college, and I'm curious about which public colleges in California are highly regarded. Does anyone have insights on the strongest programs or campuses with the best vibes?

In terms of public colleges in California that are often highly regarded for their overall academic programs, both the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems have several campuses that may interest you.

Within the UC system, UC Berkeley and UCLA consistently rank highly and are well-regarded for numerous programs across subjects. These two universities have strong reputations not only at the state level but also nationally and even globally. If you're interested in tech or engineering, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara also have particularly strong programs.

As for the CSU system, San Diego State University and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo often emerge as two of the top choices with a reputation for strong programs. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, in particular, is known for a "learn by doing" approach, especially in engineering and architecture.

In regard to campus vibes, that can vary widely depending on personal preferences. UC Berkeley and UCLA can be quite lively because of their size and location in large cities. UC Santa Barbara has a reputation for its beachfront location and friendly, laid-back atmosphere. UC Davis, on the other hand, is known for its close-knit community and strong agricultural programs. You would likely experience a different, but equally noteworthy, vibe at each campus.

From the CSU system, San Diego State is known for a balance of academic rigor and an active social scene. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo offers a small-town feel with outdoorsy activities available due to its location near natural parks and the coast.

However, to truly gauge the "vibe" of a college, consider visiting the campus in person if possible or participating in virtual tours/events to get a sense of student life and see what resonates with you.
