Is Michigan State University too large for a personalized experience?

I'm getting ready to apply and Michigan State is on my list, but I'm worried about the school size. Do students still manage to find smaller communities within such a large campus? Any tips on how to navigate that?

Although Michigan State University is large, many students find that they can still have a personalized experience. It's all about how you engage with the community and make use of the resources available.

One way to create a smaller community feel within a larger university is to get involved in clubs and organizations. Michigan State has over 900 registered student organizations, ranging from academic clubs, sports, arts, volunteer work, and cultural groups. By joining a few, you'll be able to form close-knit bonds with a smaller group of students who share your interests.

Living learning communities are also a great way to experience a smaller community within the larger university setting. Michigan State offers a variety of these communities, which are residence halls or floors where students with similar academic interests live and study together.

You might also consider seeking out a mentor, be that a professor, advisor, or even an upperclassman in your field of study. They can provide guidance, help you navigate the university, and enhance your academic experience through personal interactions. Many students find that forming these bonds really enriches their college experience.

Lastly, don't forget the power of class size. Some courses, especially introductory courses in popular majors, are necessarily large at such a large institution. However, as you progress into your major, you'll find smaller upper-level classes that provide more personalized interaction with professors. Don't be afraid to approach them during office hours; it's a great way to create a more intimate learning environment for yourself.

So, despite Michigan State's size, it's absolutely possible to create a personalized experience for yourself. The key is to actively engage with the community and take advantage of opportunities to connect with both students and faculty. Good luck!
